We are a small, family-run business that believes in the goodness of accessible, plant-based proteins. To that end, we have developed an alternate protein that we think will knock your socks off! We call it Selegra, which is an acronym for Seeds, Legumes, Grains. Because we use a combination of legumes and grains in our products, Selegra provides vegans and vegetarians with a complete protein that is not soy-based. Plus, all of the ingredients in Selegra are natural and gluten-free. And to make Selegra accessible to all kinds of people with dietary restrictions, Selegra is also nut-free with no added fat and is low in sodium. We took great care to develop Selegra this way, because our own families have these same dietary restrictions!
Our family started following a plant-based diet in 2017, for health, financial, and ethical reasons (but not necessarily in that order). At first we ate lots of beans and rice, then expanded our culinary repertoire to include chickpeas and lentils. We didn't miss the meat, but we did miss some of our old familiar dishes. My chickpea tacos didn't go over well, and lasagna with broccoli and sweet potato was NOBODY'S favourite! In searching for a protein substitute that we could use to make our family favourites, all that was available were soy-based products that many times included wheat and a long list of ingredients we couldn't pronounce. We decided that if nobody was selling the product we wanted, we would make it ourselves!

Selegra is intended to be used as a meat substitute. Similar in appearance and texture to cooked ground beef, Selegra can be used in many of your favourite dishes, like tacos, lasagne, and spaghetti sauce.

Selegra is a plant-based protein. It contains lentils and rice, which makes it a complete protein. The Selegra Crumbles can be substituted directly into most recipes which call for cooked ground beef.
Selegra is convenient to use. It is packaged and frozen in 350 gram bags. Because it contains no added fat, it doesn't cook down like ground beef. Therefore, the 350 gram portion is equivalent to a pound of raw ground beef, and will easily feed a family of four to six people, depending on the dish.
For best results, thaw Selegra Crumbles for one minute in the microwave before use. This will give it a nice crumbly texture that resembles cooked ground beef, and it will ensure even heating when preparing the Crumbles for your favourite dish. FG* Patties can be prepared from frozen, whether you choose to grill or fry them. Ensure that Patties reach an internal temperature of 165ºF before serving. When grilling Patties, it is recommended to use a grilling sheet so that you don't risk losing any of your delicious patty through the grate!
Selegra is lightly seasoned, and we've taken great care to keep the sodium low. It tastes great on its own (and yes, you can eat it straight out of the bag--it's fully cooked!), but you may want to season the Crumbles according to your tastes and the dish you are preparing. For instance, adding taco seasoning to the Crumbles gives you the versatility of using it in tacos, burritos or nachos grande. If you are making spaghetti sauce, you may choose to season the Crumbles with Italian seasoning or basil and oregano.
Though Selegra is similar in texture and appearance to cooked ground beef, it is important to remember that it is not meat, and it cannot be prepared like meat when used as a replacement in many dishes. Selegra retains its texture best when it is browned with just 1-2 teaspoons of cooking oil and then added to the dish immediately before serving. For example, when making chili with Selegra Crumbles, prepare the tomato mixture with kidney beans and chili powder and other preferred spices first and let simmer while you brown the Selegra. Stir the heated Crumbles into the chili mixture and serve immediately.
Please note that while Selegra Crumbles have been developed to be accessible to many varied diets, the FG* Patties and the FG* Sliders are NOT gluten-free. We are currently working to develop a delicious patty that is gluten-free so that those who are sensitive can enjoy these products as well.
